After the news that the 13th Doctor was going to be a woman, we took to the streets to find out what the general public really thought of Jodie Whittaker taking on the role of The Doctor in the hit BBC series, Doctor Who. Previously, every Doctor had been a man but 2018 saw the rise of Whittaker and her new companions. But what did people think of this controversial casting and is it really a step in right direction?

One member of the general public believed that this was one of the most empowering things that the BBC could have done. With the success of Lara Croft, The Tomb Raider, this shows that little girls can be smart and powerful and can still save the world. One member of the public, who is a Doctor Who fan, admitted he did not think it would work at first but then realised that the character isn't human. The Doctor is an alien and can shit into anyone and anything. They did bring up the point that the Doctor wasn't a stereotypical hero like we see in superhero films. The Doctor is a weak character, compared to these superheroes and uses his mind to save the world.

The ratings and viewings have been extremely high for this new series so far with the show touching on topics such as racism, LGBT relationships and disabilities. These are topics shows often hide from but Doctor Who manages to highlight the problems within our society whilst exploring space.
