Representation

If you know me, you will know my only aim is the create represenation in my projects. From books and roles to films.

Today, a close friend messaged me asking me about my own experience with coming to terms with my sexuality. I found out she is planning on basing a character on me in her book that she is currently writing. This is really insane because usually I am the one who is messaging my friends with 'Okay tell me your experience with-" and then they tell me so being able to talk about my own experience with coming to terms with who I am is such a surreal thing. I spoke as honestly as I could with my friend and told her about coming to terms with it in Year Nine, whilst I was still in school. I also made her a powerpoint of what asexuality means and the misconceptions that follow it. To almost have to come out twice, was really hard. I had dealt with the matter of me liking girls pretty quickly and that wasn't really the biggest problem for me. Coming to realise that I am asexual was the hardest thing.

I sent my friend the powerpoint and also showed her the extract I had wrote from my book about being asexual. After I had sent it, she then sent me the extract from her book and I was able to read about the character she had based on me. With the information and my own experience, she was able to craft a character that felt real to me, which was insane because asexual represenation is hard enough to find but knowing she had created this character, who is inspired by me was touching.
